Girard Avenue Gems: Local Shops That Dressed the Gellens & Stubbs for the Big Day

When your son is tying the knot on the shores of Cabo, it’s not just about finding the perfect outfit… It’s about celebrating the day in something that feels just right, especially when it comes from a beloved local shop. For Marti and her family, that meant turning to the trusted local boutiques they’ve loved for years.

In case you missed it, Marti’s son, Garrett Stubbs, recently married Evyn Murray in a breathtaking destination wedding. From sharp, custom-tailored suits to vibrant, statement-making dresses, the Stubbs and Gellens looks came from right here in the heart of La Jolla Village—on Girard Avenue. Discover the standout local spots they relied on—and why these La Jolla gems are a must for any occasion, big or small.

Whiskey x Leather: 7884 Girard Ave

Where Marti Found Her Dress

Marti wanted a dress that felt original, fun, and totally her—and she knew exactly where to go. As a female business owner herself, she loves supporting other women-led brands, which made Whiskey x Leather, co-owned by Ariel Hujar and Zee Chew, an easy choice.

Just around the corner from our office inside The Arcade building, this boutique is known for its cool-girl edge and curated selection of standout pieces. The vibe is equal parts laid-back and elevated, with racks filled with trend-savvy staples, easy-to-love dresses, and that perfect piece you didn’t know you needed.

The team helped Marti find a look that was bold, elegant, and completely her—perfect for her role as mother of the groom, and for dancing the night away in Cabo.

Maison Amani: 7944 Girard Ave

Where Maxine Found Her Look

When Maxine needed something elevated for her role as grandmother of the groom, she knew exactly where to go. Maison Amani—a boutique right in the heart of the Village—blends European-inspired elegance with curated fashion from around the world. Their pieces are bold, refined, and never cookie-cutter.

Known for its hands-on, personalized styling, the team at Maison Amani helped Maxine find a dress that felt just right—timeless yet celebratory, elegant yet unmistakably her. The kind of piece that makes a statement, without saying a word.

The Ascot Shop: 7750 Girard Ave

Where T.Pat, Father of Groom and Marti’s Husband, Got His Suit

T.Pat has been a loyal Ascot customer for years, but shopping for his son’s wedding was special. He knew the Ascot team would take care of him and get him ready for the big day—classic, elevated, and effortlessly sharp.

“It’s not just your grandfather’s store anymore,” says Andrew White, who helps lead The Ascot Shop alongside his father and sisters. This generational, family-run menswear boutique has been a La Jolla Village staple since 1950—anchored by its signature double Dutch doors and a reputation for timeless style. Over the past 31 years, Andy has been the force behind keeping the shop’s style fresh—modernizing fits, introducing new brands, and evolving the look while staying rooted in timeless, tailored menswear.

If you’ve met the White family, you understand why people feel at home the moment they walk in. They treat their clients like family and create a setting that Andy describes as a “guys club” rather than a retail store—with leather seating, a pool table, sports on TV, and a bar for afternoon visits. But it’s the personalized service that really sets Ascot apart. “We keep detailed records of past purchases, sizes, tailoring preferences, and more,” says Andy. It’s service that feels like family—tailored (literally) to each client.

State & Liberty: 7857 Girard Ave

Where Martis’ sons Garrett & CJ, The Groomsmen Party, Zach Gellens, and Maxine’s Husband Fred got their suits.

As an athlete, Garrett is always on the move—which is exactly why he turned to State & Liberty in La Jolla. Tucked just off Prospect Street, the shop blends sleek design with a relaxed, coastal vibe that fits right into the neighborhood. Known for their tailored pieces made with performance fabrics, the brand is a go-to for guys who want to look sharp without sacrificing comfort.

Garrett knew the wedding would be a night full of dancing, and State & Liberty made sure his suit could keep up. He wasn’t the only one sold on the fit and feel. His brother CJ Stubbs, his cousin Zach Gellens, Maxine’s husband Fred, and the full groomsmen party also suited up here—opting for styles that were clean, classic, and built for the moment. Whether it’s a wedding, a work event, or just a sharp look that moves with you, State & Liberty proves that performance and polish can go hand-in-hand.

LD Fashion Group Featuring Eva Varro: 7908 Girard Ave, Suite 12

Where Maxine Shops for Her Travel Staples

Tucked inside The Shops at La Jolla Village, ID Fashion Group has quietly been serving the neighborhood for nearly two decades—and Maxine’s been a loyal fan from the start. The boutique is curated by Stan, who built the store around Hungarian designer Eva Varro’s line of washable, wrinkle-resistant pieces made right here in the U.S.

“Maxine always tells me she has more Eva in her closet than I have on the floor,” Stan joked. And it’s easy to see why. Eva’s designs are known for their bold prints, flattering cuts, and unmatched durability. Sizes range from XS to 3X, with silhouettes designed to complement every body type.

For staples that work just as hard as she does, ID Fashion Group is always a stop on Maxine’s list

Final Thoughts

This celebration may have taken place in Cabo, but the Gellens and Stubbs families brought La Jolla with them—thanks to the local shops they’ve supported for years. From family-owned institutions to modern boutiques, each stop on this shopping list has a story, a connection, and a place in the heart of the Village.

Whether you’re planning for a big day or just looking to refresh your wardrobe, these spots are worth a visit. As Maxine and Marti have shown, sometimes the best finds are just around the corner.
