Maxine and Marti’s Local Picks: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner in La Jolla

What makes a place feel like home? Is it the views, the community, or maybe the mom-and-pop shops you stop by weekly? For Maxine and Marti, it’s all about the local shops and restaurants that have become a part of their lifestyle. Having spent years supporting La Jolla’s local businesses, they’ve become regulars at some of the best spots in town. Now, they’re ready to share their favorites with you.

Breakfast: The Cottage

Nothing says ‘good morning’ like breakfast at The Cottage. Nestled in the heart of La Jolla, it’s been a go-to spot for locals for over thirty years. Whether it’s their lemon ricotta pancakes or a simple avocado toast, there’s always something worth waking up for.

Throughout the seasons, The Cottage has been a breakfast favorite for Maxine and Marti. It’s the ideal weekend spot to ease into the day, enjoying a delicious breakfast with the lively buzz of the neighborhood all around.

The Cottage’s story doesn’t end in La Jolla. They’ve expanded to Encinitas and, most recently, Del Mar, “bringing the Southern California culinary experience” to more neighborhoods, “while making a difference, one dish at a time” (The Cottage Restaurants).

This recent addition was especially exciting for Marti and her Husband, T-Pat, as they live in Del Mar. With The Cottage so close to home, it’s quickly become one of their favorite neighborhood spots as well.

Lunch: Spiro’s Mediterranean Cuisine

Looking for a taste of the Mediterranean right here in La Jolla? Spiro’s is the spot.

When it’s a team meeting day for the Gellens, Spiro’s is one of Maxine and Marti’s go-to for picking up lunch for everyone. Whether it’s a quick bite during a busy workday or lunch shared with the team in the office, the vibrant Mediterranean flavors are always a favorite.

Family-owned since 1998, Spiro’s brings authentic Mediterranean flavors to La Jolla, inspired by the rich heritage of the Chaconas family. “Welcome to the delicious food and flavors of the Mediterranean and the atmosphere of our unique Greek ‘taverna’ tradition” (Spiro’s Cuisine). Passed down through generations, the family’s recipes bring a touch of nostalgia and warmth to every meal, making it a neighborhood favorite.

Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or enjoying a relaxed lunch, Spiro’s offers a refreshing break in the day with flavors that transport you straight to the shores of Greece.

Dinner: Manhattan of La Jolla

Dinner at Manhattan of La Jolla has been a favorite for Maxine and Marti time and again. Tucked inside the Empress Hotel, this spot brings a touch of New York’s charm to the heart of La Jolla.

Manhattan of La Jolla perfectly captures “quality Italian charm” with dishes that are “as good as it gets,” featuring entrees like signature scampi, classic cannelloni, and expertly crafted pasta al dente (Manhattan of La Jolla). Their menu of classic cocktails, fine wine, and a warm ambiance adds to the experience, making it the perfect spot for a night out.

The live jazz isn’t just background music—it sets the scene, adding an energy that makes each evening special. It’s a place where great food, good company, and live music come together for a memorable night in La Jolla.

Wrapping Up: Local Favorites

From breakfast at The Cottage to picking up lunch for the team at Spiro’s, and dinner with live jazz at Manhattan of La Jolla, these are just a few of Maxine and Marti’s go-to spots that capture the heart of La Jolla’s vibrant community. These places go beyond yummy food—they’re about good times, great company, and soaking up La Jolla’s relaxed, coastal community.
