If you spend any time walking through La Jolla Village, you know how much the charm of this area contributes to its appeal. It’s not just about the ocean views and great coffee shops (though we love those, too) — it’s about the feeling of connection, the familiar faces, and the way the streets come alive on any given day.
We first heard about the Village Streetscape Project from Phyllis Pfeiffer, Chair of the La Jolla Community Foundation, and instantly felt a connection to its mission. She shared with us, “The Village Streetscape project is a unique opportunity for La Jollans to make a difference in their own community.”
Our team at The Gellens uses this very street daily—whether grabbing a coffee, meeting with clients, or simply enjoying the neighborhood we’re lucky to call home—so we know firsthand how impactful these changes will be.
That’s why we were excited to share more about the project—an effort designed to enhance this special part of our community while keeping everything we love about it intact.
What’s Actually Happening?
Phase One of the project focuses on Girard Avenue — from Silverado Street down to Prospect Street — and aims to re-energize the area while keeping its charm intact. Think more greenery, wider walkways, safer crossings, and pockets of public space that encourage connection. As for the construction timeline, Phyllis Pfeiffer shared, “Phase One is expected to start on January 2, 2026, and be completed before the Memorial Day building moratorium.”
Over 55 new trees will be added, along with a mix of modern and classic bench seating, better lighting, and designated gathering areas at the corners. It’s about making The Village more walkable, welcoming, and reflective of the community it serves.
While only Phase One has been announced so far, this project could pave the way for future improvements throughout the Village.
Why It Matters
Beyond the aesthetics, the project prioritizes pedestrian safety, accessibility, and community gathering. Whether you’re walking with a stroller, meeting a friend for lunch, or doing some local shopping, the goal is to make your time in The Village more enjoyable and connected.
At the same time, efforts like this help breathe new life into small businesses and support the events that make this area feel so alive.
How You Can Be Part of It
Like many community-led initiatives, the Streetscape Project relies on local support — and it’s not fully funded yet. While the vision is in motion, additional contributions are needed to bring the full plan to life.
Phyllis Pfeiffer shared the project’s current status with us, “Unfortunately we just learned that we lost our $850,000 federal grant so we need to raise an additional $250,000 to start construction. Every contribution helps!”
If you’re passionate about The Village and want to be part of shaping its future, there are plenty of ways to get involved — from simply spreading the word, joining the La Jolla Community Foundation, or making a tax-deductible donation. Contributions of all sizes help cover the costs of landscaping, lighting, public seating, and the new corner park spaces. There are also naming opportunities available for benches and park areas if you’re looking for a more lasting way to give back.
